| (perhaps you would like to consider why Pier Bottom has not cut down to sea level?) Pier Bottom incidentally takes its name from a former pier once used for loading limestone quarried from St. Aldhelm's Head. There are still some odd blocks of dressed stone remaining on the beach. On the beach crushed ammonites are abundant amongst the Kimmeridge Clay shales. White uncrushed body chambers of perisphinctid ammonites are well-known features of Chapman's Pool. The diligent searcher will find much more; there are some unusual brachiopods here and vertebrate remains occur in the area.
