Organisers are putting plans in place for what will be the first Purbeck Marathon. The predominantly off road course starts and finishes in Swanage, and covers the area’s famous land marks such as Durlston, Worth Matravers, Kimmeridge, Tyneham and Corfe Castle. Featuring approximately 2000 feet of climbs (there are 4 main climbs), this will certainly not be your everyday race but for anyone fond of a challenge the stunning scenery should provide plenty of distraction.

Rose Clarke, part of the Organisational Team behind the event commented:

“We have a very active running community in the Purbecks, including a very well supported running club. The area already boasts popular 5k, 10k and Half Marathon races so it was time to complete that package with a marathon. We can offer a truly unique event, incorporating some of the best of the UK’s Coast and Countryside into one race with the added bonus of a great experience for supporters. We are positive that the Purbeck Marathon will quickly establish itself in the World running calendar.”

Billed as “One of The World’s Most Scenic Marathons” the organisers hope to attract approximately 300 runners for this year’s launch event. News seems to be travelling fast, with registration enquiries coming in via the web site, running clubs and with an active Twitter campaign already in place, the event is sure to be a winning formula.

With proceeds going to local charities it already has wide support within the community.

Dorset is one of the most family friendly holiday locations in the UK, which means that pets are welcome too. Why leave your dog behind when there are plenty of memories to be made together? There’s so much to explore for humans as well.

1. Dog friendly holiday cottages

The Purbeck peninsula was made for dogs. Whether your dog is a leaping greyhound or a more of an easy-going Bassett, the landscape at Purbeck creates wonderful opportunities for fun and exploration with your pet. When it’s time to turn in for the day, there are pet friendly cottages available so you can relax in the knowledge that you and your pet are perfectly welcome.

2. Take a Jurassic cruise from Exmouth

See the famous coastline by boat and be amazed at the scale of the ancient rocks and bays. The area is the only UNESCO National Heritage site in England and once you’re on the boat you will understand why. Onboard you can enjoy a cream tea with your family and friends. Some cruise operators will stop in fishing villages so you can get off and explore.

3. Go llama trekking

For the truly adventurous, there is no finer way to travel. You can learn how to handle and care for these unusual animals in what must be one of the most unique animal experiences in the UK. The handlers can accommodate for all ages and fitness levels.

4. Corfe castle ruins

The ruins at Corfe are the result of 1,000 years of history, shaped by the English Civil War. The ruins look out over Purbeck and are a favourite attraction in the area. History enthusiasts can pose with helmets, shields and swords. Conservation is an ongoing project around the castle and there’s plenty of wildlife living with the castle ruins, from the ravens to rare species of butterfly.

Your whole family will never forget the fantastic outdoor experience on offer in Dorset, or the great accommodation in Purbeck. Best of all, you won’t have to worry about finding a kennel or a generous neighbour to look after your dog while you’re away.

The Swanage Comedy Festival is set to grow as a two year exclusive sponsorship deal with local business Dorset Piddle Brewery (www.dorsetpiddlebrewery.co.uk) is announced.

The Swanage and Purbeck Hospitality Association introduced the Comedy Festival into the Swanage calendar only last October and the first event was a huge success, enabling a sizeable donation to be made to local charity, Heroes Haven. The Second Swanage Comedy Festival in March this year was only announced last week and already venues are selling out fast. So this picturesque Victorian Seaside Town will once again be rocking with laughter on the weekend of March 25th and 26th.

Dave Taylor, the main event organiser and a local resident previously ran Comedy Clubs in London. He has had his passion for running Comedy Nights re-ignited by the success of the Festival and is delighted that Dorset Piddle Brewery is on board. “We have had a great deal of fun with the launch of this Comedy Festival and the way it has been adopted by local residents and visitors alike is fantastic. The Comedians all really enjoyed themselves performing in Swanage which bodes well for future events. This partnership with Piddle will enable us to move the Comedy Festival forward as we have ambitious plans for the future…..”

Rob Martin and Paul Goldsack, Founders and Directors of Dorset Piddle Brewery based in nearby Dorset Village Piddlehinton (where else!), said: “When Julian & Dave approached us with a view to getting involved with the Swanage Comedy Festival it really was a simple choice. The event encapsulates just what Piddle Brewery is all about, bringing some fun and laughter into people’s lives… We are looking forward to a long and happy association with the Swanage Comedy Festival and intend to have a lot of fun along the way”

Vice Chairman of the Swanage & Purbeck Hospitality Association, Julian Maughan said;

“We always felt that Comedy would be well received in Swanage but the success of the event has exceeded our expectations. We have ambitious plans to expand the event over the next two years and finding a sponsor was critical to achieving those plans. We wanted to get involved with a local and growing company that shared our vision, and sense of fun! Rob & Paul and the Dorset Piddle Team certainly do that and we are thrilled to be working together to establish an enviable reputation for Swanage on the UK Comedy circuit!”

Dorset Piddle Brewery will be taking a prominent position on all promotional materials as well as producing exclusive Swanage Comedy Festival Merchandise. There has even been talk of a limited edition beer bearing the Festival logo… Whatever the future may bring, the association with Dorset Piddle is certain to give comedians appearing in Swanage plenty of outrageous material for their acts!

Helping to persuade our European Neighbours to visit the stunning and beautiful Swanage & Isle of Purbeck coastline at the gateway of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline, many will be familiar with Swanage for school trips or the occasional day out, whilst visiting neighbouring Poole and Bournemouth.

Renowned for its safe sandy beaches and working steam railway, Swanage is a delightful hideaway only 2 ½ hours from London. However a revolution is brewing as this beautiful area of Dorset embraces and welcomes the increased number of overseas visitors, attracted to the UK by favourable exchange rates and value for money…

Many local businesses in the area now accept Euros (and indeed US Dollars) in payment for goods and services, minimising any inconvenience of currency exchange for our most welcome visitors.

Chapman's Pool

Julian Maughan Vice Chair of the Swanage & Purbeck hospitality association says:

“By adopting an approach of minimum fuss for our Overseas Visitors we hope that their visit will be even more pleasurable.if that were possible. the local Trade & Chamber of Commerce along with the Licensed Victuallers Association welcomes the initiative and is confident that members will embrace the approach. Goods and Services can be paid for at the point of sale in Euros at the appropriate daily exchange rate, and it is envisioned that Members offering the scheme will display stickers to that effect very soon”.
