The Jurassic Coast & World Heritage Site
The Dorset and East Devon Coast has been known for years as a place of great beauty, but it also has a value that is of truly global importance. In December 2001, the 'Jurassic Coast' was awarded World Heritage Site status and became recognised as a place of outstanding universal value.
Its 155km of dramatic cliffs, tumbling landscapes, spectacular arches and sea stacks display 185 million years of the Earth's history, and countless beautifully preserved fossils enable us to reconstruct the evolution of life. It s a place of understanding and enjoyment, a scientific asset and an educational resource."
